LUMA
JOCQUELINE × GUILLAUME HIRIART CARRIAT
What we love, we leave free.

The Name
LUMA means
feather in Basque.
The collection began with Txoria txori, a poem by the Basque poet Joxean Artze. Rather than holding on to what we love in order to possess it, the poem speaks of letting it remain free, so that it can truly stay alive.
The bird in the poem stands for both freedom and love. It became the natural point of connection between Guillaume and Tei, and the feeling that runs through the entire collection.
What we love, we leave free, because freedom is what keeps it alive.
Two Beginnings
Different beginnings.
A shared vision.
One grew up with leather; the other found leather and began a new path. Their beginnings were different, but they were asking the same question: how can good leather be made freer, more personal and more alive in contemporary life? LUMA began with that question.

The Designer
Rooted in
the Basque Country.
Guillaume Hiriart Carriat was born in Bayonne in 1997 and grew up in Espelette, in a fourth-generation family of tanners, in the Basque village where JOCQUELINE's leather is tanned.
Working with his hands came naturally from an early age. He later specialized in leatherworking in Canada and joined the design team at Atelier New Regime in Montreal.
Back in Espelette, he rediscovered the archives of his grandfather, Atxi. Rather than restoring the past, he translates it through today's proportions, so that memory and the present live together in his work.
A Note from Guillaume
LUMA - Jocqueline by Guillaume Hiriart Carriat
It feels rather surreal to write this sentence, so long have I dreamt of it.
Today I am announcing the collaboration I have spent these past months working on with the Korean leather house @jocqueline.seoul
LUMA is the Basque word for feather.
I began with Txoria txori, the Basque poem by Joxean Artze, an ode to freedom and to love. The bird felt like the most obvious theme, so naturally did it bring Tei Kim and me together. He was leaving Korea to discover Europe. I needed air again, the freedom to create without second-guessing myself.
That is what the poem is about. What we love, and leave free, because it is the only way it stays alive.
Leather is the other place we found one another. I was born into it, he fell in love with it. We share the same devotion to it, and it has shaped both our lives, never more so than when we play with it and pair it with colour upon colour. That sense of play, I believe, is vital to the way we both see.
It was all of this, brought together, that led us to the shape I am proudest of to date.
More of the bags will be shown in the next days.
And I am so lucky to present it to you from the 8th to the 11th of October, at 10-12 rue des Coutures Saint-Gervais, Paris 3e

The Bag
Form in motion.
The form of LUMA began not by fixing leather in place, but by allowing it to move: the natural volume of supple leather, the subtle shift in silhouette when held, the way it changes with the person carrying it.
The handle is not an accessory added at the end. It is one continuous line that completes the silhouette, adjusted again and again until it felt most natural in the hand.
A small leather bird travels with every bag.
In the Box
Two companions.
Every LUMA comes with two pieces cut from the same leather, in the color of your bag.

Shown in Black Cherry. Both ship in the same color as your bag.
Special Edition Colors
Color as part
of the form.
Black Cherry, Meringue, Noir and Bouton de Rose are a special edition, chosen by Guillaume Hiriart Carriat himself for LUMA.
The colors of LUMA were part of the design from the beginning. In the JOCQUELINE way, outside and inside are considered together, so the first impression and the scene revealed when the bag opens each carry their own emotion.

Rosebud, in French. A pale, powdery pink, caught just before it opens.

A soft, warm white, like whipped sugar. Light without being fragile.

Black, without compromise. The color that lets the shape speak first.

The signature of LUMA. A deep, ripe red that turns almost black in the shade and glows in the sun.
